Here is a lock form the Peru & Indianapolis Railroad. Operated from 1851-1864. Lock was made by SC Thomson Newark NJ Patented 1853. SC Thomson is one of the earliest makers of railroad locks and to find one from a railroad line outside of the New England area is rare.

The LOCK WORKS PERFECT has very strong dust cover and shackle springs. Lock also has 9 links of old heavy hand forged chain. No key is included with the auction.

P&I Railroad Map

The P&I RR was chartered Jan 19, 1846 and was one of the first railroads built in the state of Indiana. Enlarge the map to see how few railroads where in the state during this time period. The P&I line ran northeast from Indianapolis and reached Noblesville March 1851. By 1854 the line was complete to Peru. The total distance was 75 miles. Some of the other towns on the early line where Kokomo and Tipton. In 1864 the railroad was reorganized as the Indianapolis Peru & Chicago Railroad. In 1887 the Lake Erie & Western Railroad was formed and the IC&P was part of the new Rail system. The LE&W in later years became part of the Nickel Plate or New York Chicago & St Louis Railroad. The Peru & Indianapolis was the oldest section of track on the NKP system.
